Jellie Park maintenance closure
Essential maintenance, renewal and strengthening work is scheduled for Jellie Park Recreation and Sport Centre as part of our planned facility maintenance programme.
We’ll be completing earthquake strengthening, upgrading the heating, air conditioning and pool water filtration, and undertaking re-cladding, internal reconfigurations, extensive refurbishment and general maintenance. The upgrades will improve the facility’s earthquake resilience, energy efficiency, air and water quality, and overall appearance.
Timing of the works
The centre will close temporarily in April 2026, with the reopening of the group fitness area, gym and summer pools planned for November 2026. The indoor pools are expected to reopen within the first quarter of 2027.
We’ve scheduled the closure to coincide with the end of Jellie Park’s busy summer pool season.
The new Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre in the central city will also be open from late 2025, which will increase capacity across the network of Council facilities. Additionally, Parakiore will become the new permanent home for High Performance Sport New Zealand, creating available space at their temporary training base next door to Jellie Park – the Apollo Projects Centre.
Relocation of Gym and Group Fitness services
We’ve arranged with Sport NZ for our Jellie Park gym and group fitness services – except for aqua classes – to temporarily relocate to the Apollo Projects Centre, helping to reduce the disruption for many members. Its proximity, size and performance-grade sporting facilities make it the ideal alternative venue.
We will keep members updated on how moving services next door might affect scheduling, but we expect our regular programmes to continue largely as normal.
Options for pool users
For our pool members and customers who would normally use Jellie Park, the closest alternative Council recreation and sport centres include Parakiore, Graham Condon, and Matatiki Hornby Centre. Members and customers with multi-visit passes can also use any of the Council-owned recreation and sport centres.
Options for pool, gym, or gym & pool members and multi-visit pass holders
- As part of your membership or multi-visit pass, you can enjoy any of our recreation and sport centres’ pools, gyms and group fitness studios. You can see our full network of centres here.
- Multi-visit pass holders can also request to have their card’s expiry date extended for the equivalent time the closure is in place. To arrange an extension, customers need to speak to the Customer Experience team or email us at membership@ccc.govt.nz.
- Gym and/or pool members can request to freeze their membership for the closure period through their Recreation and Sport online account or at the Jellie Park front desk.
- Those with a Gym & Pool membership can also downgrade to a gym only or pool only membership during the closure.
If you have any questions about your membership or the closure period, please speak to the Customer Experience team or email us at membership@ccc.govt.nz.
Swimsmart programme
The Jellie Park Swimsmart programme will be impacted over approximately four school terms, from Term 2 of 2026 until some time in Term 1 of 2027.
Due to pool availability at the Graham Condon, Matatiki and Parakiore recreation and sport centres, we will be opening up extra spaces in the Swimsmart programmes at those centres. We will update Swimsmart customers on the options available to them in the coming months.
Facility Hire groups
Additionally, our Aquatic Facility Hire groups at Jellie Park will be required to relocate to other centres. This will affect a number of Facility Hire groups across the network. If you’re part of a group that hires space at Jellie Park, or your group at another centre is affected by changes to your usual bookings, your group organiser will let you know the details when the booking allocation process has been completed. We thank you in advance for your understanding.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back to an updated and refreshed Jellie Park Recreation and Sport Centre once the work is completed.
